Reviews from students and families

The Academy of Music in Grand Rapids has a proven track record of offering quality music lessons in Grand Rapids, Michigan year round.  Our full time mission is teaching music, and we have been trusted by Grand Rapids, MI families for more than a decade.  Read our customer feedback below to see what our clients say about us.

"We really appreciate the programs offered by the Academy of Music.  Our Music Together® teacher shows depth and creativity in classes.  Three of our older boys are now all in piano lessons too.

What we find valuable in the piano program is that our teacher's instruction does an excellent job developing the whole musician.  Our boys seem to be more musical than other children their age who have been taking lessons the same amount of time.  At a work Christmas party a few years ago, when an adult was supposed to play some carols, but had forgotten her music books, our two young boys went to the keyboard and shared all of the Christmas music that they knew in their heart and in their heads.

The Academy of Music has helped our boys learn to be able to hear and understand music from deep inside and not just become good at rote memorization."

"We have been very impressed with Joey's progress in piano lessons at the Academy. Since he learns by ear, the CDs have greatly boosted his weekly progress as well as his attitude toward practicing. Sitting in during lesson time helps me to understand what he needs to practice, and it is so interesting to see how Ms. Hendricks pulls everything together for him. The instruction is diverse enough to keep his attention, yet constant enough to maintain a steady path. We appreciate our teacher's patience with him and encouragement of his talent!"

"I appreciate my son's piano teacher's sensitivity and ability to manage each of the students' needs and uniqueness....Nicolas enjoys taking piano and feels proud of his repertoire. It is also special for us to play his pieces together."

"Our son just turned five and is enjoying his 11th semester at the Academy of Music. We really appreciate the fun way in which Karsten's musical potential has been developed over the years.  More than that, we value the long lasting friendships we've gained and the way music classes have helped us work on some of Karsten's developmental delays.  The classes, music, and CDs are top-quality!"

"Because I believe that music is very important to the development my children, I enrolled my first child at the age of 8 weeks and my second at the age of 6 weeks. I tried various music programs and found that the "Music Together" program is the best. It has a wonderful approach to music, rhythm, tonalities and instruments and the children really thrive in the multi-age environment."

Both my kids like playing the piano. This was what I really wanted them to get out of lessons---a love for music. I think our teacher's method and approach have really helped with that.

The best thing about the Academy is that my children really love learning the piano. The method of instruction helps my kids understand music first, which makes it more fun than work. And it's not intimidating. They often sit down and practice or play all on their own, because they want to! I didn't want practice or lesson time to turn into a power struggle; I wanted my kids to just enjoy it.  With the Academy's teachers and methods, that's exactly the way it's going.  My kids are learning well and having fun learning something that can bring them enjoyment for their whole lives.

Taking piano lessons at the Academy of Music has been a wonderful way to introduce my son to piano in an enjoyable, stress-free, way. The method has helped him gain confidence and familiarity with the keyboard and instrument, and he regularly will sit down at the piano on his own and play, either to practice the week's lesson or to experiment for fun. I never have to force him to practice!

My son's teacher is very patient, and her expectations are very clear and easy for my child to understand.
